PURE O

Purely Obsessional OCD

Pure O, is short for “Purely Obsessional OCD,” and refers to a subtype of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) primarily involving distressing intrusive thoughts (obsessions) without noticeable physical compulsions.

Are there any compulsions with Pure O?

While the term “purely obsessional” suggests no compulsions, it is slightly misleading as individuals often engage in mental or internal compulsions. These mental rituals can be challenging to recognize and define, yet they play a significant role in maintaining the sufferers’ distress and Pure O itself.

Symptoms can vary widely but often include:

    • Intrusive Thoughts: Distressing thoughts related to physical and sexual harm, relationships, sexual orientation, religious topics or taboo topics.
    • Mental Rituals: Internal actions like repeating phrases or numbers, checking feelings or thoughts, or constantly seeking reassurance.
    • Functional Impairment: These obsessions and rituals can disrupt daily life, leading to severe emotional distress.

 

Examples of Pure O Mental Compulsions

 

Individuals with Pure O may engage in internal mental behaviors such as:

    • Checking feelings or bodily sensations—for instance, verifying emotional attachment to a partner or reactions to an intrusive thought.
    • Reassuring themselves repeatedly to confirm they are a good person or their thoughts aren’t true.
    • Repeating phrases or numbers silently in their mind.
    • Overanalyzing or ruminating about a problem or thought to neutralize its impact.

 

Causes of Pure O

 The exact causes remain unclear, but contributing factors may include:

    • Biological Factors: Differences in brain function or structure.
    • Genetics: Certain genetic traits may increase susceptibility to OCD.
    • Family History: Having relatives with OCD can raise the likelihood of experiencing Pure O.

 

Treatment Options for Pure O

Effective treatment often combines psychotherapy and medication:
